Photographing Children part 3
Friday, September 4, 2009 at 09:16AM Sometimes photographing children takes a bit of patience. Just waiting for the right opportunity. To get him in focus and the background blurred out I used a focal length aroundf 135 mm and shot wide open at f4.0 the length and the wide appeture give a short depth of field and make the nice creamy bokeh (blurred out background)

I love my "fast fifty" lens. It is a short little thing and doesn't look to impressive, but it is magic. At f1.4 it lets massive amounts of light into the camera and offers a very short depth of field. I shot this wide open. I had the my camera with me as I went to the refreshement line. This cute little girl was right behind me. I turned, aimed and shot. She was so pleased when I showed her her own picture. With a narrow dof (depth of field) not much will be in focus so it is important to get the right thing in focus. I believe that the eye closest to the camera is what you want in focus, even here where her right eye is in less light. Notice that the right eye is slightly out of focus. That is what a shallow dof will do for you.
