Some things to consider before modeling nude.
Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 07:22PM I recently read a conversation on Facebook about nude modeling. I have some thoughts. I’m sure my mom would be scandalized that I would even broach the subject, but I think there are some important things to consider for the model who is contemplating nude art modeling.
Marjaan is NOT a nude model. I worked with her 2 years ago when I was trying to figure out which one was the shutter button.
First and foremost is the idea that once you hear the shutter click, the image is made and you have little control over how the image will be used or disseminated. So be sure you are totally comfortable with it. If you have never modeled nude and are considering doing so, here are some things to consider.
1st, You may not want to let people know that you are doing this right away. If you go out on a nude art shoot and discover that you are uncomfortable with it or that it just isn’t for you, it will be easier to avoid requests for nude work if no one knew that you did model nude. I’m not suggesting hiding the fact, just delaying it until you are sure you’re comfortable with it.
2nd, Make sure you check out your photographers reputation and his/her work. Does the stuff he/she puts out look like the kind of work you want to make? What do other photographers and models have to say about them.
3rd, While it may be uncomfortable to add a 3rd party to the shoot, do it. History is full of people who were nice guys until they weren’t any more. Be safe. I would recommend making sure that someone you trust also knows where you are going and what you are doing, as a back up safety plan.
4th, Don’t put nude work in your portfolio unless you want to do a lot of it. You are going to be asked to pose nude, even if your website or MM account says you don’t do nude. If you do put nudes in your portfolio, for example on Model Mayhem, you will be asked to do that work 10 to 1 over other modeling work.
5th, Charge. You may have a hard time getting paid modeling work, but there are so many guys that want to shoot nudes and so few who will model nude, that you should charge a fee. A monetary fee, not trade. Maybe your first test run at nude you could do on a trade basis, but I wouldn’t after that.

I want to be clear to my audience, I am not advocating nude modeling. I personally have chosen to not model nude, but I know there are some who do and others who consider it. I’d like my model audience to be safe, and have a meaningful career, regardless of the types of modeling they do.
